Prof. Ricardo Rio-Tinto is a clinical gastroenterologist and researcher at the Champalimaud Foundation, focusing his work on biliopancreatic diseases, digestive oncology, advanced endoscopy, and innovation in digestive endoscopy.

He graduated in Medicine from the University of Lisbon in 1995 and became a specialist in Gastroenterology in 2005. He completed his training in advanced endoscopy at the Erasme Hospital in Brussels.

He worked until 2015 in the Gastroenterology Department of Hospital dos Capuchos and at the Luz Saúde Group, being one of the founders of reference units at Hospital da Luz and Hospital Beatriz Ângelo.

PhD in Medicine from Nova Medical School, he developed a research project on the MAGUS (MAgnetic Gastrointestinal Universal Septotome) endoscopic device, defending his thesis ‘Magnets and wire for digestive remodeling: From concept to first in-human-use’ in 2024.

He is founder of the Portuguese Society of Minimally Invasive Surgery (SPCmin), was president of the Portuguese Pancreas Club, and holds a postgraduate degree in Health Management from Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics.
